Immigration New Zealand is introducing a new visa option for parents called the Parent Boost Visitor Visa. Applications will open on 29 September 2025. This visa allows families to spend more time together in New Zealand.

Key Features

The visa is valid for up to 5 years, and parents can apply for a second visa which gives a total of 10 years.

Parents must apply and be approved from outside New Zealand.

After approval they must travel within 6 months to activate the visa.

At the 3 year mark, parents must leave New Zealand for health and insurance checks before returning.

Insurance Requirements

Parents must hold comprehensive insurance that includes:

  • Emergency medical cover: $250,000 per year

  • Cancer treatment: $100,000 per year

  • Repatriation: $250,000

  • Return of remains: $50,000

At least 12 months of insurance must be purchased upfront after approval.

Who Can Apply

To qualify, parents must:

  • Be a parent of a New Zealand citizen or resident

  • Have no dependent children

  • Be a genuine visitor who will leave when the visa ends

  • Meet health and character requirements

  • Show financial support through a sponsor, their own income, or their savings

Financial Requirements

Option 1 – Sponsored by child in NZ

  • One sponsor for one parent: $69,804.80 per year

  • Two sponsors for one parent: $104,707.20 per year

  • Add $34,902.40 for each additional parent

Option 2 – Parent’s income

  • Single parent: $32,611.28 per year

Parent Boost vs Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa (PGVV)

The Parent and Grandparent Visitor Visa allows 6 months per visit, with a maximum of 18 months over 3 years.

The Parent Boost Visitor Visa allows up to 5 years per visa, with longer stays but stricter financial and insurance rules.

Why This Matters

The Parent Boost Visitor Visa is an excellent option for families who want their parents to spend extended time in New Zealand. Because the requirements are strict, it is important to prepare in advance with the right financial evidence, medical certificates and insurance.
