INZ Transitions to the New National Occupation List (NOL) Framework

ree

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) is now using the National Occupation List (NOL) to assess jobs and skill levels for the Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV).This marks an important change from the previous ANZSCO classification system, ensuring that New Zealand’s immigration processes better reflect the modern workforce.

What this change means

The new NOL framework provides a clearer and more up-to-date list of recognised occupations in New Zealand. Each occupation now has a specific code and skill level that INZ uses to decide visa eligibility, wage thresholds, and residence pathways.

For migrants:

  • More occupations are now recognised under the NOL framework

  • It is easier to identify whether your role meets the AEWV or Skilled Migrant Category requirements

  • Clearer job codes make it simpler to prepare accurate visa applications

  • Some previously unlisted or new-industry roles may now qualify for a work visa

For accredited employer

  • You can hire migrants for a wider range of recognised roles

  • Job Checks and AEWV applications must use the correct NOL occupation code

  • Existing Job Checks should be reviewed to ensure they meet the new framework

  • Using the correct NOL code will reduce delays and strengthen visa applications

Why the transition matters

INZ’s move from ANZSCO to NOL ensures that occupations reflect New Zealand’s current labour market. This helps employers fill genuine skill shortages while giving migrants a fairer, more transparent pathway to work and residence.
