Important Updates on Translation Requirements for Visitor Visa Applications Effective 26 May 2025

Important Update: Certified Translations No Longer Required for Visitor Visas

Immigration New Zealand (INZ) has announced a key change to the translation requirements for visitor visa applications, coming into effect on 26 May 2025. This update simplifies the documentation process and aligns New Zealand's approach with Australia’s.

What’s Changing?

From 26 May, supporting documents for visitor visa applications will no longer require certified translations. However, translations are still required for all documents not in English. Applicants must:

  • Provide a full English translation of each non-English document

  • Include the name of the translator

  • Outline the translator’s qualifications or relevant experience

Who Can Translate?

Translations cannot be completed by:

  • The applicant

  • A family member

  • The immigration adviser assisting with the application

This rule ensures the integrity and reliability of the documentation.

Resident Visas Still Require Certified Translations

Certified translations remain a requirement for resident visa applications and for official documents such as police or medical certificates.

How This Affects You

This change will reduce costs and simplify the visitor visa process for many applicants. However, accuracy and professionalism in translations remain essential.
